“Cardiff is definitely my happy place. This place gave me everything I have.”

Shruti Tripathi Chopra (MA 2011)

International Journalism

“I grew up in Cardiff. I came here as a 19-year-old; this is where I did my first load of laundry, where I first cooked a meal, and where I first made a cup of tea. I remember, you know, becoming a responsible adult for the first time.”
Shruti wants to be a high-profile journalist and a role model for international students.

Indian-born Shruti is the Editor in Chief of Financial News and Private Equity News, two News Corp publications read by the world’s biggest finance firms for nearly 30 years. The publications’ youngest editor ever, Shruti is also the first person of colour and the first woman appointed to this position.

Together, we can

break through barriers to create a more diverse newsroom
“The best part about studying International Journalism at Cardiff University was its practicality. We came to class every day feeling like journalists. One day we’d be writing a news article, the next we’d be producing a radio show, and then we were told to use the university’s equipment and go out and create news packages.”

Shruti began her journalism career in Cardiff University halls, borrowing the School of Journalism, Media and Culture’s equipment to make news packages for Media Wales. Those bylines helped her secure her first journalism job in London – an absolute dream come true for someone whose first language isn’t English.

Shruti is a diversity and inclusion champion, spearheading her publication’s 100 Most Influential Women in Finance list and is widely celebrated by industry bigwigs.

She believes that together we can break down barriers and create a more diverse newsroom – something Cardiff University is always striving towards.

“The Blackweir Tavern holds a special place in my heart. After classes at the Bute Building, we can’t be bothered to cook, we’d be like, ‘Let’s get a cheeky pizza.’”
“Cardiff University taught me kindness, collaboration, and how to look out for my friends and colleagues. These are qualities I hope and pray I still possess today.”
