Dr Sarju Patel
Senior Lecturer, Medicine
How has your time at the university shaped you as an educator?
Cardiff has been a catalyst for my growth as an educator. I’ve come to understand that my role is to create inclusive, supportive environments, where students feel welcome and able to be themselves. The university’s support for innovative teaching methods and our commitment to student-centred learning have allowed me to develop and refine my approach to medical education — I’ve learnt that what matters most is what is understood, not how much I can deliver. I have amazing colleagues, who I’ve learnt so much from. I hope they feel the same way about me.
Why do you love being part of the community in Cardiff?
I’ve been privileged to work with so many inspirational colleagues, who embody Cardiff University’s unique blend of academic rigour and community spirit. I feel we all share a responsibility to each other and to our community, both within the university and beyond. Our students are willing to engage in projects that go far beyond their core medical education commitments. It’s a pleasure working with them and learning from them. I believe that the work we’re doing is improving the health of disadvantaged communities and opening doors to different pathways and careers for our students, and in doing so, changing lives.
Together, we can
What drives your passion for medical education?
As a Senior Lecturer, my passion lies in shaping the next generation of medical professionals. I’m passionate about helping them develop, not just as clinicians, but as people who understand how to think critically, empathise deeply and engage meaningfully with the world around them. Medicine is as much about human connection as it is about science, and I hope to help shape our students into medical practitioners who understand how privilege and disadvantage affect health and wellbeing. This will have a significant impact in addressing health inequalities, and inequality at a wider scale. More broadly, being an educator helps me to reflect more deeply, and become a better person.
What’s your view on the value of working collectively in medical education?
There is no other way. We all see the world from our intersectional lens, be it race, gender or sexual orientation. By working collectively, we can ensure we make the best, most inclusive decisions and role model the behaviours we expect of our students — the medics of the future. At Cardiff, the collective, multidisciplinary and diverse expertise of our staff helps students develop inclusive working practices, which can only benefit patients, their peers, their future colleagues and the wider community.
What’s your vision for the future of medical education?
I envision a future where medical education is more integrated, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of society. We need to look to embrace advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation tools to create immersive experiences. This enables students to practice clinical skills and procedures in risk-free environments, affording opportunities to master techniques before encountering real-life scenarios.
Beyond advancing our understanding of medicine, we need to ensure that our students are equipped to address the social aspects of health. I believe that by embracing diversity and integrating it into every aspect of our curriculum, we can train doctors who are not only healers but also advocates for justice and equity in healthcare.
What do you believe ‘Together, we can…’?
Together, we can transform medical education to better serve the needs of our diverse society. By working collaboratively, we can create an inclusive learning environment where every student thrives, develop the skills necessary to become compassionate and competent healthcare providers, and foster a deeper understanding of patient care and medical ethics.
